This is a series of paintings I made while pursuing my B.F.A. at the University of Texas at Austin.

I am interested in exploring the relationship between art creation, art criticism, and art consumption through the juxtaposition of the oppositional visual languages of abstract expressionism and the more didactic marks of cartographers, copy editors, scientists, and professors - all under the guise of illustrating required high school reading from late 20th century America. Abstract painting as a visual Cilff's notes. Each piece that I create is a self-contained universe with the representations and conversations between of the critic, the viewer, and the artist. Each participant existing simultaneously, encased, categorized, evaluated, and graded.
